What is Sudomemo Plus?

Sudomemo Plus (or “Plus” for short) is a service that allows you to support us while getting some sweet perks in return. Plus is not a monthly subscription, rather, it is prepaid on a per-day basis.

What are the perks of having Sudomemo Plus?

Plus perks include:

Flipnote Smoothing: Lines, curves, and edges are smoothed for a more natural look on Sudomemo Theatre. This option can be toggled on or off via the Flipnote options menu in your Flipnote’s details page.

Color Picker when Commenting or Chatting: Spice up your comments and messages with a splash of color! You’ll be sure to stand out from the crowd when using this feature. Monochrome comments and messages were so 2018…

Why does Sudomemo Plus exist?

Sudomemo costs hundreds of dollars per month to run, and most of this money comes out of pocket. With Sudomemo Plus, we can ensure the core features of Sudomemo (such as viewing/uploading Flipnotes, commenting/adding stars on Flipnotes, and chatting with others via the chatrooms) remain free and always accessible. Keep in mind that the features that don’t require Plus today will always be free. That is our promise.

Sonic with a DSi

Recording high quality audio can be quite difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. Here’s a list of our favourite audio recording techniques.

Sock on Mic

This ancient technique still works great today and involves nothing but a sock and an audio source.

You will need:

  • – 1 clean sock
  • – A device capable of outputting audio
  • – Your DSi, 2DS, or 3DS

Here’s how it works:

1. Grab your console and create a new Flipnote. Fill it with blank pages (depending on how long you want your Flipnote to be).Flipnote Studio Edit Screen

2. Head on over to the audio recording screen. Once there, place your sock over the microphone on your console.

Sock on a 3DS

💡 Tip: If you’re unsure where the microphone is on your console, take a look at this guide:Microphone locations on various Nintendo consoles

3. Grab your audio source and place it on the sock, right on top of where the microphone would be.A phone on a sock, which is on a 3DS.

4. Play your audio but don’t hit record yet. We need to test for audio clipping.

💡 What is audio clipping? Audio clipping is a form of distortion. If your audio source is too loud, the audio will distort.Adjust the volume of your audio source (if possible) so the waveform shown on the right of the audio recording screen is just below the red section.Audio recording screen on Flipnote Studio

5. Once you’re happy, hit record and that’s it!

Speed 5 to 6

Here’s another excellent method for capturing high quality audio. You can even combine this with the above technique for a home theatre surround sound experience, right on Flipnote Studio*.
*Not really, but almost…

You will need:

  • – .mp3 file of the audio you want to use
  • – Audio editing software (we recommend Audacity)
  • – Your DSi, 2DS, or 3DS

Here’s how it works:

1. Acquire an .mp3 file of the audio you wish to record and import it into your audio editing software.A web browser downloading an audio file

2. Slow down the audio to 50% speed and save it as a new file. In Audacity, you can achieve this by navigating to Effect > Change Speed.Audacity's Change Speed screen

3. Use the Sock on Mic technique outlined above, but make sure you record the slowed down audio at Speed 5.Speed 5 on Flipnote Studio

4. Once you’ve finished recording, change your Flipnote’s speed to Speed 6, and you’re done!

TRRS Splitter (Requires a 2DS or 3DS Console)

Get ready, you’re about to be blown away with this technique. You can even combine it with the Speed 5 to 6 technique for superior sound quality.

You will need:

  • – CTIA compliant TRRS Splitter
  • – A PC or Laptop
  • – A 2DS or 3DS system (this will not work on a DSi system)

Here’s how it works:

1. Find a TRRS splitter that is CTIA compliant (not OMTP). We use the Rockit Audio Splitter (affiliate link) and it works great.

Rockit Audio Splitter

2. Start off by plugging the splitter into your console.

TRRS Splitter in 3DS

3. Now, plug in a regular TRS AUX cable into the microphone port of the splitter. On our splitter, this port is clearly cabled with a microphone symbol.

AUX in TRRS Splitter

4. Finally, plug the other end of the TRS AUX cable into your PC or laptop. This may also work with a phone or tablet, but we haven’t seemed to get that to work with our setup.

AUX in PC

5. On your computer, play some audio and see if your console picks it up. If successful, you’ll see the waveform moving to the music. If not, check your connections, try a different TRS AUX cable, or try a different TRRS splitter.

Flipnote Studio receiving audio

💡 What’s going on here?
Basically, we’ve tricked our console into thinking our computer is a microphone. Anything (audio wise) we output from the computer will be received by the console.

6. Adjust the volume on your computer so the audio doesn’t clip. On our system, volume 4 to 6 works best, your mileage may vary, however.Audio Mixer

7. Use the Speed 5 to 6 technique outlined above and hit record. Make sure the slowed down audio is playing from your computer and being received by your console.Speed 5 on Flipnote Studio

8. Once recorded, un-plug the cable from your console and set the Flipnote’s speed to Speed 6, and that’s it!

Sudomemo Connection Troubleshooting: DNS

Q. I have followed the instructions to connect to Sudomemo, but I am having still issues.

A. The likely problem is that you have more than one connection to the same Wi-Fi hotspot set up in your system settings; your DSi won’t know which one to go to.

S. You need to clear all other connections to the same Wi-Fi hotspot that do not have the Sudomemo settings in them. Do this by tapping the connection and then chose ‘clear connection’.

Q. I keep getting error codes when I try to connect, is the server down?
Please ensure that you have ‘Auto-Obtain DNS’ turned Off, with the primary DNS set to 104.248.000.110, and secondary set to 008.008.008.008.
If you still have issues, try a different Internet connection (e.g mobile hotspot) – you may have an ISP that is forcing you to use their own DNS resolvers. You can verify this issue using this tutorial, and then reach out to your ISP with this information.

Q. When I try to access a certain page on Sudomemo, I keep getting an error code, what do I do?

A. Contact us to report this – it is probably a bug! Information on where to contact us is at the bottom of this page.
Please do not post a Flipnote about the issue, as it may not be seen.

Q. I have tried everything, I think the server is down… but there has been no activity on Sudomemo’s social media… what is going on?

Please reach out to support@sudomemo.net or via the Sudomemo Discord.

If you need to contact us you can do so through the following channels, listed in order of preference.:

🚧 Following this guide will require Custom Firmware (CFW).
If you do not have CFW, please visit https://3ds.hacks.guide/

ℹ️ This guide is for Flipnote Studio and not Flipnote Studio 3D.

WARNING: Resetting your system or uninstalling Flipnote Studio will cause you to lose access to your Sudomemo account.

Installing Flipnote Studio

Since you’re unable to get Flipnote Studio from the eShop, you’ll need to obtain it via other means:

1a. If you don’t have a DSi with Flipnote Studio installed, you will need to find a copy of Flipnote Studio for your region elsewhere. Please note that the file must end with .cia.

1b. If you already have a DSi with Flipnote Studio installed, you may follow this guide to extract it from your DSi and convert it to a .cia file: https://gbatemp.net/threads/scripts-dsiware-conversion-easily-convert-to-nds-and-cia-files.478575/

Flipnote Studio DSi as a .cia File

2. Once you’ve gotten Flipnote Studio as a .cia file, transfer it to your “cias” folder in your 2/3DS’ SD card. If you don’t have this folder, create it in the root of the SD card.

Windows Explorer showing Flipnote Studio being moved to an SD card

3. Open FBI and navigate to SD > cias > Flipnote Studio.cia > Install and delete CIA. This will install Flipnote Studio to your 3DS’ home screen.

FBI displaying the current directory

4. Close FBI by pressing B a few times to go back to the main menu, then by pressing Start. Now, reboot your 3DS.

Shortlink to this article: flipnot.es/isphelp

Hello! If you’ve been linked to this article, then you are most likely a support technician at an Internet Service Provider.

Your subscriber is attempting to use a service called Sudomemo, which is a Web community of artists and animators creating content using Flipnote Studio on the Nintendo DSi System. A previous service existed called Flipnote Hatena, but it was shut down in mid-2013. Sudomemo exists to fill the void that it left behind, and provide an outlet for those artists and the people who enjoy their work.

If your subscriber is experiencing issues, then there may be an issue with how your configuration is affecting their ability to connect. In general, Sudomemo has one key difference in how it operates from what you’ll see with normal web traffic, a DNS override to briefly change the destination of traffic.

Here is the article that your subscriber followed to get it set up:

For DNS Issues

If your subscriber is having issues with DNS (which can be diagnosed with this tutorial), you may be redirecting DNS queries (UDP traffic to port 53) to your own resolvers.

If this is the case, please either provide your subscriber with instructions on how to disable this behavior, or if you have more fine-grained control at your end, please permit DNS traffic to 104.248.0.110 to pass through uninhibited.

Our DNS service only changes the following few domains:

nas.nintendowifi.net

flipnote.hatena.com

ugomemo.hatena.ne.jp (only in Japan)

After your subscriber connects, the domain used changes to an internal one that normally points at the same place anyway, so it should be indistinguishable from regular traffic after that. If you have anything in place that might interfere with this step, you’ll want to make a change to permit this to occur.

We ask that you work together with your subscriber to resolve the issue to the best of your ability. Thank you very much!

If you have Sky Broadband, Comcast, or another ISP that interferes with DNS queries, read this or this and then check out sudomemoDNS after reaching out to your ISP with our ISP Help Guide (shortlink flipnot.es/isphelp).

Sometimes you may run into issues connecting to Sudomemo related to your DNS settings. If you’re getting 20110 (“Service for this software has been discontinued.”), follow this guide to determine where things are going wrong.

Forenote: Make sure you have your proxy settings disabled.

1. As explained in the setup instructions, make sure you still have your DNS settings set correctly:

2. Next, go to the main menu and open the Nintendo DSi Browser:

3. Once it’s finished loading, visit ts.sudomemo.net.

4. The screen you get will instruct you what to do next.

If you made a mistake in your DNS settings, or your ISP is overriding DNS:

If things are configured correctly:

If you reach a red screen, read through the text completely and follow the steps presented in them. If you receive the green screen, you should be good to go!

You might try SudomemoDNS – a simple way to connect to Sudomemo when your Internet Provider is overly restrictive.

Make sure to turn the proxy back on when testing the connection to Sudomemo.

If you still get 20110 when testing after receiving the green screen, feel free to reach out to us, under the Help > Contact Us section in the navigation bar.

Your Flipnote Studio ID is a 16-digit ID that identifies your account on Nintendo DSi and account on Sudomemo.

Occasionally, we may ask you for your ID. This is how you find it in Flipnote Studio:

1. Tap the wrench  icon in the top-right corner of Flipnote Studio’s main menu to open your Settings.

2. Your Flipnote Studio ID will be displayed on the first page of your Settings.

Sudomemo has a URL shortener for easy sharing!

Sudomemo's URL Shortener

Simply put the Flipnote ID at the end of https://flipnot.es/ and it will redirect you to the Flipnote.

You’ll see this used in other places as well, such as Help Center and Sudomemo News articles.

Sudomemo Terms of Use

Section 1: Acceptance

These terms and conditions (the ‘Terms of Use’) cover your use of the ‘Sudomemo’ service if and when you access it, either though the Flipnote Studio application or on www.sudomemo.net. By selecting the ‘Agree’ button you confirm your agreement to these Terms of Use.

Section 2: Connections with Hatena and Nintendo.

Sudomemo has not and does not receive official endorsement from either Nintendo or Hatena. This service is solely provided and paid for by Austin Burk and run by staff (“Team Sudomemo”) with help from community donations. It is not managed in any way by Flipnote Hatena or Nintendo staff; any content that has been uploaded by staff has been uploaded in their spare time outside of working hours, where they do not represent either company.

Section 3: Uploaded Flipnotes and Content.

1. Flipnotes and other content posted to Sudomemo may be used by Team Sudomemo at any time for purposes such as promotions or demonstrations.

2. Users also acknowledge that Flipnotes and other content uploaded to the Sudomemo service may be revised or changed by other users (as ‘spin offs’) and be published (in whole or in part and including any modifications thereof) either on Sudomemo or elsewhere freely.

3. By uploading a Flipnote or other content, a user understands that they must own – or obtain – all rights and permissions necessary to post that Flipnote or other content. This can include copyrighted characters or assets, soundtracks, likenesses, trade secrets or other proprietary rights. If a user uploads a Flipnote or other content displaying other people, it is necessary for that user to obtain their permission beforehand.

4. Each user is solely responsible for:
(i) Interactions and exchanges of information with other users from their username.
(ii) The Flipnotes or other content they upload to Sudomemo through their username.
Therefore, users have the responsibility to make sure that other persons connecting to and using Sudomemo with their system/username are aware of the rules.

5. ‘Censoring’ parts of Flipnotes or other content that are against the rules of Sudomemo does not serve as a means for them to be acceptable. Such methods may include hiding offending content behind black bars, or by claiming that the content is something else. Similarly, adding a warning about inappropriate content – even in the thumbnail of a Flipnote – will not prohibit the rules of Sudomemo from being applied.

6. Team Sudomemo assumes no responsibility for monitoring the Sudomemo service. It is therefore the responsibility of each user to ensure that the Flipnotes and other content that they post is lawful and does not infringe on any third party’s rights.

Team Sudomemo reserves the right to remove any Flipnote or other content from the Sudomemo service for any reason whatsoever and to discontinue Sudomemo at any time or for any reason. Offensive Flipnotes and content may be deleted, membership terminated, and other actions may be taken including law enforcement referrals. Team Sudomemo may delete any Flipnote or other content that, in his sole judgement, violates these Rules or Terms of Use or which may be offensive or illegal, or which may harm, threaten or violate the rights or safety of any person. A more extensive list of prohibited content and rules appears below.

Section 4: Community Guidelines (the ‘Rules’)

1. Prohibited Uses. The following activities are strictly prohibited when using Sudomemo:

1-1. Infringement of proprietary rights, such as copyrights, trademarks, and patents.
1-2. Violation of another person’s publicity, privacy or portrait rights.
1-3. Conduct that damages someone’s reputation (this includes impersonating another person), or is an obstruction of business.
1-4. Fraudulent activities.
1-5. Accessing/hacking the account of another user, damage or destruction of computer systems and any other criminal activity including illegal access to others’ computers or Nintendo DSi/3DS systems.
1-6. Any other criminal or illegal activity.
1-7. Posting of Flipnotes or comments that are in violation of these Terms of Use and/or any rules published on Sudomemo.

In addition, Flipnotes or other content that contains the following is not allowed on Sudomemo:

1-8. Advance notice of a crime, instructional information about criminal activities or actions that may initiate a crime.
1-9. Discrimination/abuse towards any group or individual based on race, nationality, religious belief, gender, social status, place of residence, physical characteristics, medical history, education, assets or income.
1-10. Gore, or other shocking content. This includes blood or content related to suicide.
1-11. Sexual words or innuendos, as well as actions related to or performed with the intention to induce sexual relations or other obscene activities.
1-12. Profane, vulgar, or obscene content.
1-13. Ethically vulgar, harmful or rude content and offensive subject matter that promotes hatred, and the circulation of information referring to pornography or prostitution.
1-14. Nuisance, harassment, slander and defamation of another person, or actions which cause mental anguish or financial loss.

As previously stated, Team Sudomemo reserves the right to decide whether Flipnotes and other content are appropriate and compliant with these rules in respect of violations other than copyright infringement, such as, but not limited to the activities listed above. Team Sudomemo may remove a Flipnote or other content from Sudomemo and/or terminate a user’s access for uploading such material, without prior notice.

Section 5: Making Claims of Infringement

If you believe that any material on the Sudomemo service infringes upon your copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, patents, publicity rights, privacy rights, portrait rights or any other of your proprietary rights, you may contact Team Sudomemo by means provided elsewhere on this site.

Section 6: Miscellaneous.

1. Team Sudomemo reserves the right to discontinue any aspect of Sudomemo at any time and undertakes no obligations to preserve or provide access to any Flipnote or other content.

2. The failure of Team Sudomemo to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms of Use shall not operate as a waiver of such right or provision.

3. The section titles in these Terms of Use are for convenience only and have no legal or contractual effect. These Terms of Use operate to the fullest extent permissible by law. If any provision of these Terms of Use is unlawful, void or unenforceable, that provision is deemed severable from this Terms of Use and does not affect the validity and enforceability of any of the remaining provisions.

4. Please be aware that, in order to apply the Terms of Use, and possibly carry out the termination of a user, some details of DSi/3DS consoles connecting to Sudomemo are recorded.

Section 7: Authority and Jurisdiction

These Terms of Use shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws applicable in your country of residence.
